Introduction to Emotional Regulation - The Basics

Emotional regulation is a critical intervention within occupational therapy, designed to support both paediatric and adult populations who face challenges in managing their emotions due to various disabilities. These difficulties can significantly impact a person’s independence, social relationships, expression of needs, behavior, and participation in school, home, and play activities. This comprehensive workshop aims to provide OTs with a foundational understanding of emotional regulation, equip them with the skills to identify clients with these needs, and guide them on how to effectively deliver emotional regulation therapy.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to emotional regulation, exploring its significance and how it affects daily functioning and quality of life. Participants will gain insights into the theoretical underpinnings of emotional regulation, laying the groundwork for more advanced concepts and practices. This will be followed by practical guidelines for recognising signs and symptoms of emotional dysregulation in both children and adults, ensuring that OTs can identify clients who may benefit from this therapy.

A key focus will be on the OT’s role in assessment, intervention, and evaluation related to emotional regulation within the NDIS framework. Participants will learn about various assessment tools and techniques to evaluate emotional regulation needs accurately, as well as evidence-based intervention strategies to enhance emotional regulation skills. The workshop will highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach, and how collaboration with other professionals can enhance therapy outcomes.

To ensure practical application, the workshop will offer "Hot Tips for Success," providing actionable advice and best practices for implementing emotional regulation therapy. The session will conclude with a Q&A segment, allowing participants to engage with the presenter, clarify doubts, and share experiences. This interactive component will foster a collaborative learning environment and ensure that participants leave with a clear understanding of how to apply the concepts and techniques discussed.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

Really great informative workshop, going through the intervention process was particularly helpful in learning the general steps to take e.g. identifying body cues then identifying the emotion

The workshop was great to understand approaches towards emotional regulation. I really liked the example of how to speed up/slow down a client during a session and then use emotional regulation.
