What will you learn?
In this workshop, you will gain practical knowledge and tools to:

Assessment foundations – person, environment, equipment

  • Identify key assessment domains including diagnosis, prognosis, mobility, transfers, posture, limb function, skin integrity, respiration and swallowing
  • Measure body dimensions accurately and apply bariatric somatotype considerations to guide seat size and aperture selection
  • Analyse pressure risks at the greater trochanters, sacrum and during transfers
  • Assess environmental fit across toilet and shower spaces including circulation, doorway clearances, thresholds and safety risks

Product parameters and clinical reasoning

  • Compare frame types including upright, tilt in space, recline, self propel, transit and joystick controlled options
  • Select seat dimensions, pressure care options and custom apertures that protect bony landmarks and align with toilet bowls
  • Determine appropriate armrests, backrests and leg supports based on postural needs, personal care access and transfer method
  • Understand bariatric configurations, lift and travel features, bidet compatibility, safe working loads and adjustability ranges

Trial, risk assessment and documentation

  • Conduct functional trials including transfers, shower entry, toilet positioning and wet testing in context where possible
  • Review person and support worker perspectives relating to comfort, manoeuvrability, care access and transfer safety
  • Identify risk mitigation strategies such as pressure monitoring, seat integrity checks and safe maintenance schedules
  • Document assessment findings, clinical reasoning and equipment justification and prepare safe use guidance for the client and care team

  • Write AT justification reports and require strong clinical reasoning linked to safety, function and risk mitigation
