The NDIS is changing... and for OTs, knowing what has changed is only part of the challenge.

The bigger question is what these changes mean for the way we assess function, gather evidence, navigate NDIS processes, make recommendations and communicate support needs.

This practical workshop moves beyond simply unpacking legislation. We’ll focus on the reforms OTs need to know about, translate them into their practical implications for OT practice, and explore how to strengthen your assessment, evidence and recommendations in response.

What will you learn?

Build your understanding of the changing NDIS environment and, importantly, what it means for the work you do every day.

Part 1: Understanding the Reforms

• Navigate plan changes, including  variations, reassessments and reviews of decisions  — and understand which pathway, forms, consent and evidence may be required
• Understand updates to the  NDIS Support Lists , replacement supports and what they mean when recommending supports
• Explore  Support Determinations  and their practical implications for participants, funding and OT recommendations
• Understand the emerging  High Support Needs pathway , including what OTs may need to assess and evidence
• Explore the  changing definition of functional capacity  and what it may mean for the way OTs assess and describe function
• Consider changes to  reasonable and necessary criteria  and what decision-makers need to see in OT evidence
• Understand what may differ for  new participants, reassessments and plan renewals 
• Prepare for upcoming practice changes, including  mandatory registration

Throughout Part 1, the focus is not simply  “What has changed?” but: What does this mean for me as an OT, and what might I need to do differently?

Part 2: Strengthening OT Assessment, Evidence & Recommendations 

Understanding the changing NDIS environment is only the beginning. The next step is ensuring our assessments and reports provide the evidence needed to support good decision-making.

We’ll explore how to:

• Start with the  decision being made  and target your assessment to the specific evidence required
• Build a clear evidence trail from  disability → functional impact → functional performance → assistance required → support need → outcome 
• Move beyond opinion and make functional evidence  specific, observable and measurable 
• Gather and  triangulate evidence  from observation, functional assessment, participant and supporter information, standardised tools and other sources
• Interpret assessment findings  rather than simply reporting scores or observations
• Make your  clinical reasoning visible  so the reader doesn’t have to join the dots
• Write stronger recommendations that clearly explain  what support is required, how much, why it is required, the evidence supporting it and the intended outcome 
• Structure reports so  key findings, evidence and recommendations  are easy for decision-makers to locate
• Streamline report writing  by removing repetition, unnecessary history and generic information that doesn’t contribute to the decision
